A trades-led detailer has actually installed the systems they model, so coordination decisions reflect how the work goes in — maintenance access, supports, and fabrication tolerances. Offshore production shops model to a clash-free state at lower cost and higher volume, but without field-installation experience behind the model.

Often, yes — offshore shops compete on cost and volume. The trade-off is field installability, communication cadence, and timezone. A clash-free model still has to be buildable, so for high-stakes MEP and process piping, trades-led detailing frequently costs less once field rework, RFIs, and schedule risk are counted.

It means the spool and shop drawings are accurate, dimensioned, and tied back to the coordinated model, so your fabricators can build straight from them — supporting purchasing, prefabrication, and just-in-time delivery without a callback. Many BIM providers are modeling-only and never produce fabrication-ready output.

Clash-free means no two objects occupy the same space — it does not mean the run can be installed, accessed, or supported. People who have installed the work catch what a screen-only model misses: maintenance clearance, hanger and support locations, weld access, and install sequence.
